DYK for Vojin Đuričić

[edit]

On 3 April 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Vojin Đuričić, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Yugoslav finance minister Vojin Đuričić also headed an astronomical society and an aero club? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Vojin Đuričić. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Vojin Đuričić), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

Question from Pearlocean1256 (06:39, 8 April 2026)

Hello, I want to start to contribute to Wikipedia by translating some articles in French language in order to better understand how Wikipedia works. What are your recommendations? --Pearlocean1256 (talk) 06:39, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. Sorry for taking a bit to reply. I personally don't find translation too useful, because English Wikipedia usually has higher quality standards than other languages, but feel free to try. If you decide to, read the guide at Wikipedia:Translation — there are some important rules to follow for legal reasons. Good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 12:19, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Hyperspace2025 (19:07, 13 April 2026)

[edit]

Hey! Would love your help! I was trying to setup an attraction in Dubai called AYA Universe, currently in review and it could take 3 months..wondering if possible, i could edit the business that owns that attraction, which owns another one in dubai called House of Hype.. what you recommend so in 3 months i dont start over if the current draft gets rejected... thanks for the advice! --Hyperspace2025 (talk) 19:07, 13 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. As for the length of time for your draft to get reviewed, that number is only the age of the oldest submissions (and is back down to 2 months now anyway) — most submissions don't take that long to get reviewed. If this business has an article already, you can edit it — anyone can — just remember to write neutrally about it and cite your sources. That being said, if you have some sort of connection to this company, you'll want to follow our conflict of interest guidelines. They can be annoying, but Wikipedia has had far too many bad experiences with people affiliated with companies trying to promote their business. Hope that helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. JustARandomSquid (talk) 21:15, 13 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from KezzaAms (13:36, 16 April 2026)

[edit]

Hi, I would like to write pages only based on virtual fashion, AI fashion, and digital fashion. Can you give me suggestions on what's the best way for me to niche it down? Should I go super broad with the pages, or should I stay very focused on a very specific vertical within the industry? --KezzaAms (talk) 13:36, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. You might find the guide at Help:Your first article useful. One thing it'll tell you is that the topic you're writing about must meet notability standards — in a nutshell, there must have already been several reliable sources writing about a topic for it to have an article. In practice, this means you can't just choose a random topic to write essays about, as this could cross into original research, which isn't allowed. Writing an article from scratch is one of the hardest tasks for newcomers, but you're always welcome to try. Feel free to ask any questions you might have, and good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 14:54, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Is it good to reference a lot of existing articles? What's the best way to generate trust? Of course I aim to be non-biased and only reference outside sources and link to those KezzaAms (talk) 15:15, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you mean existing Wikipedia articles, no, you shouldn't use them as references because Wikipedia isn't a reliable source. Other articles published by reputable journals or established news outlets, yes, absolutely — in fact, ideally, every single fact in your article should be backed up by a citation to a reliable source! JustARandomSquid (talk) 15:43, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great, that's helpful thank you. And also my intention to approach it through citations from reputable fashion publications. KezzaAms (talk) 07:42, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Gbanys (01:54, 22 April 2026)

[edit]

Hello! Thanks so much for your offer of help. I wanted to get into things here before asking you any basic setup questions - but I think I finally stumbled upon one. When editing/adding links to an article, is it best practice to add a link to each occurrence of a topic, or is it better to link to it once in the beginning of the article? (i.e. if the article is about penguins but it references the arctic multiple times, should I add a link every time it says arctic, or is that overkill?) Thanks in advance for the advice! --Gbanys (talk) 01:54, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. There is in fact an entire guideline about adding links, at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking. To quote from there:

Link a term at most once per major section, at first occurrence. Do not re-link in other sections if not contextually important there. Other mentions may be linked if helpful, such as in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, and hatnotes.

Hope that helps, and that you like it here and decide to stay. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have! JustARandomSquid (talk) 07:32, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Ayden D. Irwin (07:59, 22 April 2026)

[edit]

Howdy,

I'm having an issue trying to add a newspaper to this list: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_Minnesota) between the Montgomery Messenger and Moose Lake Star-Gazette. I have this text written though the page is refusing to save edits: |- |The Monticello Times |Monticello |Wright |1857 |Weekly (Thurs.) |Adams Publishing Group |[1] |- is there something particularly wrong with this set of code information? I had planned after adding this to create a wikipage for this newspaper as well for I'm extensively involved with it, and within the next decade I intend on purchasing it, so I figure it ought to get its proper representation being the third oldest newspaper in the state of Minnesota!

Thanks for any help, Ayden D. Irwin --Ayden D. Irwin (talk) 07:59, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. I'm currently on my phone, which means that it'll unfortunately be hard for me figure out why that wouldn't work. Perhaps there need to be spaces or new lines after the pipes? Also, have you tried using the Visual editor? You might find it easier. Incidentally, if you're involved with the newspaper, you might want to read WP:COI before writing an article about it. Sorry I can't be more useful. Please feel free to ask if you have any more questions. Good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 09:41, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Stephaniejupp (16:05, 23 April 2026)

I want to edit a fact in a Wikipaedia article assigned to my grandfather Frederick Aubrey Hoghton. His father W A Hoghton was NOT a member of the ICS but was Chief Inspector, Postal Dept, Scinde and Persian Gulf in 1874 (3 years before his death). Question from MCoulthartb2 (22:41, 25 April 2026)

[edit]

Hello. I received a message about conflict of interest from an editor, "Leonidlednev" about half an hour ago, cautioning me about conflict of interest when editing an article about myself. As I explained to them, I was indeed in the process of correcting a number of gaps, inaccuracies and absurdities in the article (which appeared out of nowhere a few years ago from an unknown source), and explained this to the editor. I have not yet received a response to my explanation. I would very much like to have some guidance on how to undertake this necessary correction please, or alternatively to have the article taken down in its entirety. Thank you. -- Michael Coulthart --MCoulthartb2 (talk) 22:41, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. The guidelines for editors with a conflict of interest are extremely restrictive, because Wikipedia has way too many bad experiences with people trying to promote themselves or their company. This also means that even if you do submit edit requests like the guideline tells you to it's highly likely you'll have to wait a very long time to get them answered. This is alright if you're patient, however there is something else I can offer you. We also have equally strong guidelines to determine which topics warrant an article, and looking at your article I'm not sure it meets them. If you are in fact ok with the article being taken down, I think that could be managed. The fact the article subject also wants it deleted isn't a decisive factor, but it can be taken into account. Tell me if that's what you'd like, so I can proceed. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have. JustARandomSquid (talk) 07:30, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Excellent .. thank you for proposing the solution. Yes, I would like the article to be taken down please. There is a related article as well, on the Canadian Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance System (the unit I ran between 2005 and 2026 when I was working for the Canadian federal government), that also mentions me with inaccurate facts and similar or identical gaps and absurdities. It may have been posted at the same time —- I don’t know, because I just noticed it yesterday. I realize I don’t have the same case for it to be taken down as I do with the BLP about me, but would it be reasonable for me to edit it if I can demonstrate I am no longer in COI (as I recently retired)? Thank you for your detailed attention and understanding. -Mike ~2026-25351-36 (talk) 13:50, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I have been reading the deletion discussion, and there seems to be a consensus that the bio should be deleted. I am very new to these Wikipedia discussions. May I ask how long it might take to finalize a decision and see the article taken down? Thanks! MCoulthartb2 (talk) 15:25, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry, I forgot to get back to you when I started the discussion. Deletion discussions usually run for a week, and only last longer if participants can't come to an agreement, which isn't the case here. I'll check in on it periodically to see what's going on. JustARandomSquid (talk) 16:59, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Excellent .. thank you!! Once this is resolved I do have additional questions regarding a couple of other postings where my name happens to be mentioned (although this is not the motivation — they could both just use some careful edits, and I need to be sure I do not cross COI guidelines). ~2026-25351-36 (talk) 17:03, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Softwareperson1000 26 April 2026

[edit]

Hello, what do I do if I want to upload an image to wikipedia that is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2 or any later version? There is no option in the image uploading tool en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload for GPLv2+ so should I just select the closest generic option (in this case I believe Software screenshot is the closest one) despite it being implied it is non-free media for those generic options. The Free options basically only provide Creative Commons licenses as options, but those are not the only free licenses that exist and I am fairly certain GPL qualifies as a Free license on Wikipedia here even when it's used for media other than software. I wonder if I could also choose "None selected" as an option or would that be invalid Softwareperson1000 (talk) 12:08, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! That's strange. I'd recommend you go to the upload page on Wikimedia Commons and try there — when it asks for a license, give it "{{GPLv2+}}". You should be able to use it on Wikipedia, and it's preferable images be uploaded to Commons anyway because they can then be used by other Wikimedia projects. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. JustARandomSquid (talk) 15:06, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! If you can't do it yourself, you can tag the article with {{AI-generated}}. If the user continues to insert AI-generated text into articles, you can report them to WP:ANI. Hope that helps! Hello, is it possible to publish a wikipedia, not about a real thing, but about a game thing, if it's possible, if not, are there are sites that are similar to wikipedia and allow publishing things that dont happen in real life, but in games? I am really curious and I want that for fun, waiting for your answer. --Neizbestnyi (talk) 14:28, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Technically, yes, Wikipedia can have articles about things in games, but they have to meet the notability criteria (for example, having news articles written about them), which most things in video games unfortunately don't. The game itself might have its own article on here that you can contribute to. Also, the game might have a wiki on Fandom, so check there. Good luck! Hi! My edits keep getting reverted, even though I was never intending to vandalize anything. I was only adding helpful, additional information with cited sources to back them up. Is there anything I can do? --Galaxyhype (talk) 22:55, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! That can be frustrating. The revert by CluebotNG is automatic — it's usually right, but sometimes it messes up. If you're sure your edit is good, just revert back and ignore it. Of the other two reverts, the one on Blossom (The Powerpuff Girls) makes more sense, because I guess you did technically remove content, even though I wouldn't bother reverting that, but I have to say I don't understand this other revert. There's no reason given, so perhaps I'm missing something. Maybe @Xexerss can stop by and explain? Otherwise, I don't think you're doing a bad job at all for a beginner. Stay neutral, cite your sources, and happy editing! JustARandomSquid (talk) 06:47, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding. I actually moved some of the information (like the ages) to List of Characters in The Powerpuff Girls page because it would make more sense there. I did receive a warning about deleting information without an adequate explanation, which I will not do again. But other than that, I only just corrected a minor spelling error and added a picture of Blossom from The Powerpuff Girls (2016). I unfortunately did have a bot list me in Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism when I made slight adjustments to List of Characters in The Powerpuff Girls page, but I wasn't even vandalizing any pages at all. Perhaps it could be reported as a false positive? Thanks very much! I've had experiences editing on other wikis that weren't Wikipedia, though it was on rare occasions. I may not be on here that much, but thanks anyway! Galaxyhype (talk) 06:58, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello JustARandomSquid. I wish to add under References, further reviews from contemporary publications of the game Troy. Please provide a pathway for me. --Podarces (talk) 23:29, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I assume you mean the article Troy (game)? You can't just add links in references, because you have to be using them to reference some material. You can either create a "further reading" section, or, better, summarise some content from these reviews, under "Reception", for example, and then cite those publications as source. Feel free to ask me if you need any help doing that. Good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 17:39, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

Hope you are good. I need to change the title of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr%C3%A9gate_Island from Frégate Island to Fregate Island. How do I do that? Can't find the way to edit the title, only the content.

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know what device you're on, so I can't give you any specific advice, but you're looking for the "Move" option. There's a page on it at WP:MOVE. Hope that helps! JustARandomSquid (talk) 13:05, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
hi, thank you for the welcome and reply. I'm using google chrome on a laptop. I am not trying to move anything, just need to change the title from Frégate Island to Fregate Island.
Thanks! Esteban-Fregate (talk) 14:04, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
"Move" actually is the option for renaming. It's a little bit confusing, but you're moving the content of the article from one page title to another, if that makes sense. This is because you can't change the URL of the page — you have to move the page to a new URL. I hope I've managed to explain that. I don't currently have access to a desktop to tell you exactly how to do it, but if I recall correctly, the option should be in a toolbar to the right of the screen. Good luck! Hi there! Thanks for signing up for the June 2026 GAN backlog drive! We have noticed that you have made little to no reviews during the drive. Hi! How do I add userboxes? Bc when I try to type the code with {{ it gives me templates --Alienalias7587 (talk) 22:25, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

A userbox actually is a type of template. I assume the issue is that in the visual editor once you type "{{" it opens the template selector for you? The only fix there is to try switching to the source editor and then copy-pasting the code there. JustARandomSquid (talk) 09:04, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

Why is MrOllie undoing everything I am doing?

I've noticed complaints all over the internet about him too --Cardinalhijack (talk) 21:43, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. This is a fairly common situation, where some of our most prolific anti-vandalism editors can't find enough patience to properly explain Wikipedia policy and guidelines to new editors and create unnecessarily hostile situations. Unfortunately, this time I think they're right. The source you were using isn't really reliable for Wikipedia purposes, for all the reasons they mentioned. We generally want books, journals, newspaper articles, etc., and not what is basically unsigned information pages from fan-run mod lists. Additionally, as someone mentioned in one of the discussions, the fact that there are other citations in the article that don't meet our standards doesn't mean more should be added — see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. As I said, it's unfortunate that the first editors you encountered were a little brash in trying to explain this to you though. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, and I'll try to explain them as best as I can. Happy editing! JustARandomSquid (talk) 18:55, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. You are correct — plot summaries that simply re-tell a story from a work don't generally need citations, because it's assumed that the source is the work itself. Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. Your article is publicly available, but is in what's called your user space, which means it doesn't officially count as an article, and won't usually show up in, for example, Google searches. There is a page on publishing articles that you might find useful at Help:Your first article. The current next step if you wanted to get this article published would be to submit it for review at Articles for creation (AfC), which you can do by opening your page in the source editor (the one that's like code) and adding {{subst:submit}} at the very top. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. JustARandomSquid (talk) 13:59, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Jamie9870 on St Martin's at St Chad's (08:52, 7 July 2026)

[edit]

Hello, I've been suggested to add sources to this article, but I can't find any reliable sources. Could you help me with this. Thank you in adcance! --Jamie9870 (talk) 08:52, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. Sorry for the delay in answering. Adding sources to articles is a really important job on Wikipedia — the best articles have all information in them cited to reliable sources. Unfortunately, a lot of articles, especially old ones, have been written backwards, meaning someone wrote from memory and now has to add sources. When looking for sources, always search Google, Google Scholar and Google Books as the minimum. If you're familiar with the topic, you might also know more places to find sources, like local library websites etc. It is possible you won't find any sources — from my quick search, I don't see any for this article. In that case, the article topic might not be notable. If you're absolutely sure there are no sources anywhere (even physical books you might not have access to), perhaps the article should be deleted. The suggestions feature is a valuable tool to show newcomers the range of work done here at Wikipedia, but long term you're better off finding a topic you're interested in, one where you know where to find sources, and focusing your energy there. So for now, my suggestion would be, if you can't find sources for this article, to find another article, either randomly or through some topic you find interesting, and try and find sources for that. If you can't, don't sweat it— just choose another article and try that. Even one added citation is a valuable contribution. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any more questions you might have! Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. Each article here has a corresponding talk page — in the simplest terms, they're used for talking about the article. Users interested in the article can leave messages to each other, discussing and coordinating on how best to improve the article. When starting on large edits to an article, it's not a bad idea to check the talk page to see if other editors have left anything there that you should be aware of. There's a simple guide to talk pages here, which has a link at the bottom to a more detailed technical guide if you want to learn more. Hope that helps! I believe I did so correctly, but I would appreciate if you could double check for me; The actual details of the books are correct, but I am unfamiliar with Wikipedia's more coding-style referencing ("piping", "CS1" errors, etc.) compared to the academic style of simply providing the information as needed. Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello JustARandomSquid:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in August!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than a month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 August 2026 through 31 August 2026.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 5000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:37, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

DCWC August update

The 2026 Developing Countries WikiContest has been running for a month now, so let's check in with the competition so far!

As of the time of writing, our top contestants are:

  1. Nigeria Vanderwaalforces (submissions) ahead of the pack with 715 points, with two FAs and many GAs on the monarchs of the Kingdom of Benin;
  2. Simongraham (submissions) with 291 points, mostly with GAs on jumping spiders, alongside various GAN and FAC reviews;
  3. Jaguarnik (submissions) with 240 points, mostly from an FA on the 1945 film Ivan the Terrible;
  4. Grnrchst (submissions) with 215 points, mostly from GAs on anarchist history in various countries, alongside many GA reviews, and;
  5. Vestrian24Bio (submissions) tied for 4th with 215 points, with an FL and four GAs on Indian cricket!

These competitors are in the lead, but if past experience is any indication, big shake-ups might still await us in the contest. If you're looking for a way to boost your position, we got a table of review requests from fellow participants—you can rack up a lot of points through reviews, and it might just convince others to review your own nominations! You can also look through the eligible reviews page to find other articles to review, with highlights for articles eligible for the 1.5× multiplier. The coordinators would like to thank Jaguarnik (submissions) for his work to keep this page up to date.

Thank you so much for all your work in the contest so far, dear participants, and keep on the good fight against systemic bias on our wiki! Have any questions? Question from AriaRose1881 (08:03, 2 August 2026)

[edit]

Hello! I noticed a small factual error in an article on George Lusk (individual involved in the 1888 Jack the Ripper investigation) and was wondering if it would be possible to pass the correct information onto someone who’s a more experienced editor as I’m not good with computers and not really up for learning the whole system right now. Would you be able to help or pass info onto someone who’s interested?

The error is that in the sub section entitled “From Hell Letter” it currently erroneously states that the Dear Boss letter is “…regarded by many Ripperologists as being a modern hoax, surreptitiously placed into archived records.[4]” when it is in fact well documented as having been received during the original investigation in 1888.

While there are one or more of the numerous Ripper letters maintained in the police archive that may fit this description the Dear Boss letter is most certainly not one of them as it appeared in at least one contemporary news source and is the origin of the term Jack the Ripper as it is commonly accepted as being the first place the name appeared in print.

The term “hoax” often appears in association with this specific letter largely because in 1931 journalist Fred Best confessed that he and fellow journalist for The Star newspaper Tom Bullen wrote it in an attempt to boost waning public interest in the case and as such it is widely considered by Ripperologists to be a fake. While the confession happened in the 1930’s the letter itself was both written and sent in 1888. I believe someone writing for Wikipedia (possibly an AI writing tool) conflated all the above facts to make the incorrect entry.

I’m not sure if or how many references are required to correct this portion of the article? I’m happy to provide what I can; it seems it could pretty easily be fixed just by removing the incorrect information.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration, best regards. —A --AriaRose1881 (talk) 08:03, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. I can't look into this right now, so this is just based off of what you wrote here, but you can raise this at Talk:George Lusk, which is the article's talk page that interested editors sometimes monitor. That being said, I do encourage you to try and fix it yourself. One thing that's worth trying is looking into the reference for that sentence — maybe the original source says, for example, that many Ripperologists think this, but that the majority does not, and then you can edit the article to more accurately reflect the source. The source doesn't seem to maximally reliable at first glance, so if you find a more scholarly one to support your version, you can just replace it. I might be able to make the edits for you later if you know exactly what you want, though again I do encourage you to try and do it yourself (something I will gladly help you with), as editing Wikipedia is a useful skill for nerds to have! Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have. JustARandomSquid (talk) 10:04, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Unbranak (17:56, 2 August 2026)

What is editing? --Unbranak (talk) 17:56, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that is open to anyone to add to or modify, which is what we call editing. You might find the information at Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia useful. Hope that helps, and feel free to ask any other questions you might have! JustARandomSquid (talk) 20:17, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Xuân ơi 44 (20:49, 2 August 2026)

[edit]

Hi, I've been making a bunch of edits recently, and I'm kinda confused on how images work. I presume only images on Wikimedia can be used, and those images must be noncopyrightable? I've been making SVG versions of some company logos, but the svg logo for LiVE Exchange seems to be getting a fuss on Wikimedia since it's copyrighted? Even though it's just text and shapes? Is the gradient the problem? Maybe because it's based in Thailand? --Xuân ơi 44 (talk) 20:49, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Unfortunately, copyright is not an exact science — yes, the logo is made out of just text, but it has that gradient, and it has the stylised e and x that could make it copyrightable. I think the best course of action would be to leave it there, but not get offended if the Wikipedia Commons editors decide to delete it anyway. I'm sorry you didn't have a very good experience with copyright on Wikipedia. Please feel free to ask any other questions you might have, and good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 07:13, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Xuân ơi 44, copyrighted logos can still be used on English Wikipedia to identify a subject of an article, as long as they include a non-free use rationale. They just can't be kept on Wikimedia Commons, it has to be local to English Wikipedia with the "Upload file" link. -- Reconrabbit (talk) 14:37, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from AlexAnderson2050 (13:59, 3 August 2026)

[edit]

Dear Sir, I'm an American English teacher in Iran.

Can I edit articles in Persian? I just came across an article about HDMI cables/ports at:

in which there are a number of typos.

Thank you for your attention!

Kind regards, Alex Anderson American English teacher in Iran --AlexAnderson2050 (talk) 13:59, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Unfortunately, this is the English Wikipedia, so I can't really help you with the Persian-language one. That being said, it seems like everyone is allowed to edit that page, so I'd just go ahead and try to improve it. Everything on every Wikipedia can easily be reverted and fixed, so you don't need to worry about making mistakes. Good luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 14:58, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Portugiki (20:30, 3 August 2026)

[edit]

Hello. I'm eager to start contributing. Is there anything I can help you with? I'm sure you have plenty of work, and I could use being useful under a competent mentor first. Cheers --Portugiki (talk) 20:30, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thank you for your interest in editing Wikipedia — we can never get enough editors! I don't really believe in telling new editors what to do, because unless they find what they're doing interesting, they'll get bored and give up. I've left a welcome message on your talk page that includes some links you might find useful. To answer your question, I'd particularly point to the task center, where the maintenance and writing sections might give you some ideas on what tasks you'd like to do.
I see you've also tried the feature that automatically suggests newcomers tasks — while I think it has a bit of a problem where you're not editing articles you're interested in, it's still a good way to see what sort of work you could be doing. One thing that I see you've already been notified of on your talk page and that you have to be careful of is that any information you add to an article has to be cited to a reliable source. Wikipedia is very strict about this, much more so than regular book-form encyclopedias, because anyone can edit it and write whatever they want without having to be an expert. The message on your talk page has some links on how exactly to do that. Without that, anyone can say "I don't believe that's true" and remove the information, which I see has actually happened already (though that shouldn't discourage you!).
Again, thank your for your interest in editing Wikipedia, and feel free to ask any questions you might have, generally or about a specific task you might be interested in, and I'll do my best to help. Best of luck! JustARandomSquid (talk) 07:38, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Mentor. I already noticed the problem on the article I was corrected in. I'll take more care in the future. Also, I'm using the task finder from the home page to work simply because that way I feel like I'm adding value where it is needed. Portugiki (talk) 09:26, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do whatever you think is best. Help is needed everywhere — the majority of our 7 million articles aren't up to our standards! I hope you don't mind if I check on your contributions from time to time. You can see I've already offered some advice on your talk page. A random thing I noticed looking at your edits is that in the article for Jonny Kim you added the sentence He has described spending time with his family as a priority and has publicly spoken about the challenges of long deployments, including the difficulty of explaining extended absences to his children. but the NASA biography you cited there doesn't actually say anything about that? I assume you cited the wrong thing there, so you might want to check up on that. Either way, thank your for your contributions, and keep up the good work! JustARandomSquid (talk) 20:46, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've went back and corrected it. Thank you for your patience. Portugiki (talk) 23:42, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi JustARandomSquid,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
