Unofficial peer review of something I wrote.. again

I'm annoying, I know. Hope you like it at Virginia Tech, I've heard it's a good school.
Any chance you could find the time to take a quick glance at USCGC Dione and give me some thoughts? I'm going to give it a thorough read-through this weekend and make sure my sources and info isn't all jumbled up, hopefully learning from my mistakes (cough cough Dixie Arrow cough cough), aha—but I think a set of eyes like yours would be beneficial.

I'll certainly help out, as this gives me a reason to procrastinate :) . Since I recently got an article rated as A-class and another which I hope would reach FA, do you have any greater plans for the article? I can certainly help with improving the article even more.

I might shoot for FA in the future with this one, since I think she had an interesting career and all, but I definitely want to get a few different articles in GA space beforehand. Dixie Arrow was a rough start to writing higher-level articles and I guess I just want more practice in that regard. With the aforementioned article, I thought I was ready and ended up wanting to bash my head against a wall and quit multiple times during the week-long review.. ugh.

If you'd be up to trying to give help for making the article FA status, I'd take it, just so it would pass GA quicker (and maybe get through FA if I ever get there). Just try not to be absolutely soul-crushing with it, haha. PhoenixCaelestis (Talk · Contributions) 20:13, 25 August 2025 (UTC)

In all seriousness, I am sorry that you felt that way with Dixie Arrow. I also must apologize if there was anything I did to discourage you, as that was not my goal. My first GA article, USS Gyatt, passed this March. I had already written ~40 articles, going back to 2021. Since March, I've written another 9 GAs. Encyclopedic and technical writing is a learned skill that slowly develops. As a personal example, my last assignment in high school English class was to review and analyze old pieces of my writing. Naturally, I examined old Wikipedia articles I created, and was surprised to see how advanced and well-refined my writing style became without me noticing over the course of a year. All you need is a little practice and experience, that's all!

One thing I recommend is to do a GA review yourself. Just find a short article to review and figure out what works and what does not. This is what I did to improve Gyatt so much. I just rewrote USS Savannah (1842) and I believe it is GA quality. Since both articles have a similar-ish style, feel free to be as mean as you want when you think about what works and what does not work with Savannah (although I am not telling you to do a GA review).

USCGC Jackson was my first ever Wikipedia page/edit, and I have a solid background with the Coast Guard during the era. Currently, I'll probably focus on expanding some pieces of information while improving the prose. If you think I am being stupid, feel free to revert me. I have some ideas to improve the article, but I will save them to myself for now.

Does my little pep-talk help? Let's take this slow and try to not get burned out.

The main issue is that most of the article is uncited. Since you are writing about a living person, each claim needs to be supported by a citation. I have looked at the contest entry for this article. It appears to be a C-class article. Please provide additional information on the ships' uses, assignments and, if applicable, activities. Then it can be confirmed as meeting criterion b2 and B class. Unless ships or ships classes are prototypes or experimental, with no significant uses, actions or deployments, this type of information is needed to reasonably cover the topic without obvious omissions. You have written such articles so I think you are already familiar with these assessments. On the other hand, the assessor who is a new user and apparently relatively young may not have enough experience to assess B class articles, especially the b2 criterion. I am not sure why as a new user that person has stepped in to assess the article. I plan to leave a message that will be somewhat encouraging but will ask the user to get more experience and watch some assessments to be able to handle this task. Thanks. Of course, you can let it go to C and upgrade it to B next month for the appropriate points. I suspect you may wish to do it this month if you can. Thanks. While I do aim to write B-class articles, most of these more obscure foreign warships lack information on their service life outside of dates or overtly vague descriptions. Despite this, I find them interesting enough to warrant an article and a solid base for any future reworking.

The short answer is "it depends." Some articles are locked due to persistent vandalism, so only non-new accounts can edit it. Some, such as USS Gyatt, have a grey lock on the upper corner. This means an account needs to be 3 days old and with 10 edits made to edit the article. Other articles, such as Erica Kirk, have a blue lock. To edit these pages, accounts need to be older than 30 days and have made 500 edits. In the meantime, there are plenty of other important yet unprotected articles out there.

Hello! There are a few places that fit that description, such as Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard or Wikipedia:Dispute resolution requests/Noticeboards. Granted, the noticeboards should only be used if discussions have gone no where and you want a third person to weigh in. The only place to "report" a user is Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard, intended for situations where someone's chronic behavior is an issue (ie. harassment).

That is an excellent question. In short, the answer is: it depends on copyright. Here at Wikipedia, all of the images are hosted at Wikimedia Commons, which hosts the images seen on every Wikipedia in every language and more! If you want an image of a specific person, Wikimedia Commons probably has it. You can insert it directly into a Wikipedia article by clicking "Insert" and "Photo" while editing.

You can also add images to Wikimedia Commons, but you need permission. If the image is yours, you can do whatever you want. When you upload an image, it steps you through who to credit. You can also say if copyright expired or if none applies. You can just click the "Upload" button on Wikimedia Commons to get started!

- What if the photo is already shared on their public website, which we can attribute to them? Would we still need permission?

- What does a "permission" looks like? For example, if I want to add a company logo or a person's photo, do I need their written permission?

- What if I can't reach the company or a person for their permission, but their logo/image is publicly accessible and attributable, can we not use it for WikiPedia?

• Attribution should be to the original source and where you found it. If a public website (such as the government) says an image is copyrighted by someone else, then the image is not free to use. However, if the website cites it to a government agency, then it will be considered public domain (in the US, at least).
• Uploads Wizard on Wikimedia Commons steps you through it, but permission would often be a notice waving copyright or a creative commons tag. You can also get written permission from a person and share it!
• Yes*. Trademarks apply to logos, but fair use can apply. To an image with a 'Fair use' tag applied, it would be shrunk to still qualify.

If I understand your question correctly, the copyright of an image applies from the original source. A photo in a book cited to photographer Jim Smith would be under copyright if there is no reason to believe the material is copyright free (ie. published in 1900). You can certainly make digital versions of flags/emblems/etc you find offline, as your rendition falls under your copyight, as long as it is not trademarked. Everything under your copyright is free for you to do as you wish!

Hello, and welcome! I certainly understand where you are coming from.

There are two ways of editing an infobox. The first way is to select the infobox and click 'edit', which would pull up a screen and show each row of the box. You can also switch over to the source editor with the eye-looking tab on your upper right hand side. You can learn more here. The source editor would allow you to change the text directly and display everything in plain text. Make sure to only change the name(s), or the template may break!

@PhoenixCaelestis I'd say so! If I were making the page, I would only list the namesake once for the sake of a straightforward infobox, but there is nothing wrong with listing it twice or just once in the military service section. Am I understanding your question correctly?

Hello! That is a wonderful question. If I understand your question correctly, you are referring to the oxford comma, also known as a serial comma. On Wikipedia, writing you see on articles are kept similar by the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. The manual intentionally does not ban, or only allow, certain writing styles. This is why some people use the oxford comma and some people do not. This is the same reason why versions of English, such as British or American English, are all used. In short, people do both.

You can create a draft article in your sandox (User:Amarastudios/Sandbox) or a draft under the topic name (Draft:Name of show). Once that is done, you can submit it to Articles for Creation for review. Looking at your username, it seems this may be a company account. Having a named account insinuate that it is shared is a violation of the username policy and may result in you being banned. In addition, if this is a show connected to your company (or if you are being paid), you must disclose it per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

@Very high frequency Hello, good to see you! That is a very good question. While the Rollback Page mentions 200 edits as a lower limit, you can request the permission once you feel confident in your ability to use it (such as by fixing low level vandalism). Whoever would grant you permission would check your edits history to see if you have a history of good-faith and competent edits, so I can not really assign a numerical value to the number of edits needed. If you fight vandalism a lot, then it can be a great tool! You can also mention your reasoning for why you want the tools in your request to build yourself a better case.

Regarding your CN tags at Lehakat Pikud Merkaz

Hello! While I am on break, I found your CN tags to not entirely be accurate. The first one makes no sense since the scandal in question is clarified in the following paragraph which is sourced. The second one is just impossible to back up with anything, so I removed it for the time being. The third one is fair but trying to find anything here is not entirely easy either, but I'll try.

The only source I can find that could help with the second claim and third claim is Tessler's book about the ensembles, but I can't find any place that has a digital copy of it.

I placed those tags for the sake of a GA review, so these issues could be fixed before they hurt a review. Per the Good article criteria, reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose);

Essentially, every claim in an article needs to be backed up by a reliable source. The first tagged claim should be cited to the source later used, as the claim lacks an inline citation even if the point is expanded upon later. Since the sentence was standing alone, it needs to be cited. The second and third things I tagged came off as opinions, and there were no sources at all to which they could be cited.

@UnVerseHi Hello! That is a great question. I steadily agree with your concerns, and this should be addressed. I have a bad time verbalizing what makes this promotional, but Wikipedia:Identifying PR and Wikipedia:Identifying blatant advertising can help explain it. Essentially, the absolute and vague terms is unencyclopedic. For instance, " These capabilities allow the platform to automatically classify, extract, and route information from structured and unstructured documents, significantly reducing manual data entry and improving operational efficiency" is puff and can simply say, "intended to reduce workload by interconnecting documents" or something like that.

I am not shocked that this is a Xerox-related page; they have been known for using Wikipedia for stealth advertising (which is regulated in various places). Looking at the edit history. User:Amber.Simpson21 made the edits. For no coincidence at all, a Amber Simpson is a marketing manager at Xerox.

I'll start by removing the uncited bits. If you are concerned, we could work on getting the article in a better shape...or nominate it for deletion/redirection to Xerox. GGOTCC 23:38, 29 December 2025 (UTC)

Since Wikipedia has a global scope in both users and content, there is no one style that takes precedent (ie. American v British spelling, Harvard or short citations), so you are free to do as you please. The most important thing is to have things make sense and consistent within an article. However, there is a manual of style that lays out some tips. You can check there if you run into something and search for the topic you are looking for (no need to read it all!)

To address your wonderful questions:

1 ) If there is, that would be news to me. Whatever you think gets the job done and makes sense would be great! Since the article is inconsistent, feel free to pick whatever works and go with it.

2) Best practice is "2000 to 2005" as the dash characters sometimes render differently on older software, makes the line read as an equation, and is more natural when spoken. These simple formats are easy to fix, so no worries if you do it.

3) Great question! For the sake of avoiding repetition, you should only link the word once

4) While prose and paragraphs is usually the best way to communicate ideas, you should go with whatever feels right, especially if the information does not work well with a paragraph. The manual of style has a much better explanation than what I can give you, located here!

If you are ever looking for an example, you can go through the list of Good Articles and find something similar to what you are writing about. While every topic is different, I have found it helpful to have some idea of what I should aim for.

But now that I've had my first page reviewed I do finally have some questions. 1) How do I reference a birth certificate I have a picture of. There is no reference number because when I interviewed the subject, I took a picture of the birth certificate for reference. 2) Because I interviewed the subject, I used those 2 interviews as a reference and then used it heavily throughout the article. How do I properly reference that interview. 3) I have a great quote about an artist's art work from a press release from a gallery. How do I reference that quote - inline better than trying to use that as a reference. 4) I received feedback that the evil hand of AI had something to do with the writing of the page - hilarious - guilty as charged (only for the opening paragraph). How do I find what AI referenced to talk about this person's work - where did AI find it's information? My understanding is that AI pulls from all info that is available on the web anyway - so what use is AI, really? Any thoughts? 5) Tone - I have a former reporter reading my entry to catch mistakes in tone. I knew the subject 40 years ago. Given that, I'm quite old and not tech savvy. Looking for clarification is always better then living in ignorance. If you ever do feel bad about making mistakes, then feel free to see a list of some of the dumbest mistakes to the site by experienced editors (my favorite is accidently deleting the main page and banning the founder!).

To start, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that merely agitates existing information to one place. An article should only contain information previously published by sources independent of the subject, and the site would be the last place something is written about. Wikipedia:Reliable sources has more information. While you are free to cite sources of all formats (books, newspapers, websites), they should also be verifiable so someone else has the ability to check the source themselves. This does not mean the information needs to be on the internet, but it has to be freely accessible to others, such as a rare book that exists in various libraries.

To address your questions:

1) While the birth certificate can be cited if there is information to find it (such as it being published as part of an archive), the source is not verifiable if there is only one copy that no one but the topic has access too. Since you said it was for an interview, could you instead cite the interview?

2) Help:Referencing for beginners explains how one can make a citation. You can just click the "Cite" button and fill in the boxes. If the interview was published in a newspaper/book/story, then you can cite that. If the interview was never published, then it is not reliable if no one else has access to the information nor if it checked during publishing.

3) Same above! You can use an inline citation by placing the blue number behind the sentence/claim it supports. The press release could be cited.

4) The issue with AIs (LLMs in this case), is that it is a language predictive script. While newer LLMs can fact-check itself (and may list a source after a claim), the so-called "black box" of neural networks make it impossible to identify what exactly the LLM used to create a sentence. The software is trained upon a massive amount of text to "understand" language patterns and what makes sense when seen together/ Even when given an input, such as a book, the AI has a tendency to invent quotes and claims as it only serves to predict the next word. This is why these LLMs are inherently unreliable and should not be relied upon for factual accuracy. In your case, the lead section only summarizes the article. You can write it yourself! There are no need to cite claims in the lead section if the article cites the same claim.

5) Wikipedia follows enclopedic tone (you can see some tips here), where facts are relayed directly, without commentary, and as they are found in sources. If your topic never did something that brought negative attention, then there is no need to cover negative evaluations that do not exist. A balanced article, while not needing negative information about the topic, should also not be overtly positive. While someone may have been amazing, explaining their impact/recognitions is better than "they were the best X to ever live".

That is a great question. First-party references, also known as primary sources, are not banned. It is a tricky subject, so that is why most people stay away from it. Wikipedia:Identifying and using primary sources and its subsection WP:PRIMARYCARE go into better detail then what I can explain, but primary sources are fine as long at they are not overused and used as needed. In your case, that would be a great use, as the primary source has information not found elsewhere, is itself reliable, and which cited for information that can not be disputed. For instance, it is similar to citing a publisher for the number of copies sold of a certain book. However, an article all cited to advertisements about how great X is would be promotional.

I have an issue with a user that just removes my edits. I tried to go through the proper channels of Administrative action review, and it seems I'm making some mistake and everyone is attacking me for it. I am not really sure what is going on, but have you asked @Yamla or other users what they have an issue with at the talk page? Much like a user talkpage (what you are on now), an article talk page is for discussions around improving an article. Other users who are interested in the topic and weigh in there. Adding and removing the same information over and over is going nowhere (this is what WP:3RR is about).

It is worth noting that you should have instead asked Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and not Administrative Action Review; those are two different things and the post to Administrative Action Review was removed.

Thanks GGOTCC yes it does. I was intending to speak with @Yamla but as you can see above that user just simply stated what I asked about is false. Thank you for clarifying the other parts. Here is the issue at hand:

I spend hours editing the Arman Tsarukyan wiki article; later, the user @GOAT Bones231012 will come and just undo my entire work, and often, without stating a reason why. Sometimes he will state 1 or 2 reasons, however, they are minute details in an entire work. When I ask him about why he's undone it, and when I request that he stop doing it, he just tells me he's not here to hold my hand. Later, he undoes my entire work again.

I don't think this is an effective way of working, and I want to report this behaviour; however, I tried reporting it, and I got instantly attacked by mods instead. Again, I might be making tons of mistakes, all I was asking is that I am told about my mistakes instead of my entire edit being deleted. This is the first time I'm using Wikipedia to edit, and I am genuinely amazed of the behavior and exclusionary behavior instead of just trying to focus on the topic at hand. I assume inserting the image is the same as an image. Future French aircraft carrier has a 3D model in the article, so you can use it as a template. Wikipedia:Conflict of interest explains it all; when it comes to requesting edits, you can discuss the issue on the article's talk page. When viewing any article, there would be a "talk" tab below the article's title if you edit from a computer. Clicking that would pull up the talk page. There, you can request specific changes. Better yet, you can write the information you want the article to state (while being balanced and cited) for other people to help review and bring onto the article. Talk:Northrop Grumman has an example of what this looks like. If no one else replies to you, there is also an automatic edit request system, but I am not that sure of how it works.

The problem is the this: the user BaldiBasicsFan is editing the article List of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio films and changing the wikitable sortable to episode table when it's a filmography of short films released in theaters. "Episode table" is the name of the template that displays film information, often used to list episodes. The wikitable is a generic table that can be modified to display any kind of information. There is no specific requirement for the Episode table to be used explicitly for episodes and not for a list of films/shorts. However, the wikitable can be used to add new types of information, such as the production number.

You can learn more at Help:Minor edit, but a minor edit is meant to tag small, uncontroversial edits such as adding links or fixing typos. While looking at the edit history of the article, a small "m" appears next to your edit. Fundamentally, you could not mark any of your edits as "minor" and no one would mind.

I am not very sure what you refer to. If you mean your edits to Pine Mountain Club, California, then a user reverted the changes as it advertised a website with your username, citing the website. Hello! That is a great question.

As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia should generally cite reliable, secondary, published sources (WP:42). While these letters are very interesting and great artifacts, they should not be cited if no one else is able to access them, as no one has access to your email or library archive to check the information. In addition, information should generally come from published secondary sources. The process of professionally publishing content involves fact-checking and reviews, which helps filter out incorrect/trivial information. As this is about a living person, it is also important to make sure each claim can be reasonably relied upon and easily verified. The issue with primary sources (such as letters) is that information in them can often be incorrect, as either the writer was misinformed or the situation changed. WP:BLPSOURCES has more information for your exact situation.

That being said, there is no ban on citing primary sources. For instance, I cited a letter when writing USS Savannah (1842) (ref 18). The difference was that the letter was later published (so anyone with the book can check it) and elaborated upon information from secondary sources. If you have a different source that makes the same claims, then you could just cite that!

The best thing to start with is to review Help:Getting started and in your case, Help:Your first article. You can create a draft article in your sandbox (User:Bear yup yup/Sandbox) or a draft under the topic name (Draft:Name of person). Once that is done, you can submit it to Articles for Creation for review. If you want to write about a living person, it is important to make sure each claim is verified and supported by a source! You can read more here: Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons.
