Mass Wasting Article Peer Review

1.The article provides a clear definition of mass wasting and successfully distinguishes it from other geomorphic processes such as erosion. Its structure with separate sections for types, causes, and hazards—aligns well with how we have discussed hazard processes in class. I especially liked how the article connects mass wasting to broader environmental systems, which echoes our course frameworks about human–environment interactions and how landscapes continuously reshape themselves. The section on hazard mitigation also reflects concepts we covered about risk reduction and land-use planning.

2. Several sections are quite brief and would benefit from deeper explanation. For instance, expanding solifluction, earth flows, and submarine mass wasting would help balance the article. Additionally, the occurrences section could better integrate ideas we learned in class about climate change intensifying slope instability, especially with increasing rainfall extremes. The article would also benefit from incorporating perspectives related to social vulnerability, a key class theme, such as how communities with limited resources may face higher risks from landslides or have fewer mitigation options. Including more diverse case studies and diagrams would help illustrate how mass-wasting events intersect with both physical and social factors. Strengthening citations across sections would also improve reliability.

3. The most essential improvement would be enhancing balance and connecting physical processes to human risk and vulnerability. The article focuses mostly on geomorphology right now, but mass wasting is also a social issue, who lives on slopes, who has access to evacuation, how land development increases hazard exposure. Adding this dimension would align the article with the broader, interdisciplinary understanding of hazards we have developed in the course.

4. This review reminded me of how important it is to integrate both physical science descriptions and social dimensions of risk. It made me realize that my own article should also address preparedness, risk perception, and vulnerability rather than focusing solely on the physical process. I will also double check that my lead section provides a clear overview and that my structure remains balanced across sections, supported by reliable sources.
