Editing Philosophy

[edit]

My goal is to be correct, not right. It does not matter to me, at the end of the day, whether or not I "win" an argument – only that the most accurate version of an article is written.

Furthermore, I follow all Wikipedia guidelines on neutral point of view. This means I am not out to impugn any individual or organization. So, if I write something that is negative, it is only because that is what reliable sources state.

Finally, Wikipedia is not the place for self-promotion. The way to advertise your organization is with a well written and well referenced article, not through promotional wording. In other words, show, don't tell.

If you have any questions or concerns, I am more than willing to discuss them. Please feel free to start a new section over on my talk page!

Can I edit an article about my museum?

[edit]

As I have contributed heavily to such articles, I have received a number of enquiries from aviation museums asking essentially some variation of whether they can update or change their article. As this happens often enough, the following will answer some common questions and address some frequent mistakes that new editors make.

First things first, you're going to want to have a look over conflict of interest policy. Personally, I regard the prohibition on editing articles that one has a connection to as not absolute, but merely extremely strict. I believe it can be done. However, the overwhelming majority of attempts fail to meet this standard. I assume good faith, so if you want to give it a go, I am not opposed. Yet, if you should elect to do so, do not be surprised if your edits have to be undone. To help prevent this from happening, there are a few other important policies to keep in mind.
The issue that occurs most often is promotional wording. As stated above, I interpret this very rigorously. Avoid using peacock wording – such as how your museum founder is "legendary" or an aircraft in your collection had a "distinguished" service.
After promotional content, the next most common problem I encounter is that individuals assume that because they are involved with said museum, they can speak with authority for it. I am here to tell you that it doesn't matter if you are the president of the museum, if you don't cite your sources, your edits will most likely be removed. Wikipedia works on verifiability, not truth. Furthermore, these sources must generally be independent. This means not your museum website. For example, news reports about your museum are excellent places to start.
Third, many people assume that because I created or contributed significantly to an article, I have some sort of special authority over it. No one on Wikipedia – not the creator, not a significant contributor, not your museum – owns an article. Anyone can edit it. By the same token, should you decide to make an account, it cannot be used by everyone from the museum and must be tied to a single person.
I would recommend reading "What Wikipedia is Not" to get a handle on what to avoid. For example, there is a tendency of some to be excessively detailed about every aspect of the history of an aircraft in their collection. Wikipedia is not the place for this. It must be noteworthy. (Note that while noteworthiness is technically distinct from the better known notability – as the latter does not address article content – consulting said article is generally useful as there is significant overlap in philosophy between the two concepts and its explanations may help your understanding of it.)
Finally, should this process seem too daunting, there are a number of alternatives. One option, what is officially recommended, is that you request a change on the talk page. To be completely honest, the problem with that is that on smaller articles it often goes unnoticed. If you would like to reach out to me to discuss potential edits, I am more that willing to do so. I will not, however, accept any compensation, nor act as public relations, nor violate any of the rules above.

If – even after all that pedantry – I haven't driven you off, I welcome you to join us on our quest to make more knowledge available to more people!
