Like the scientists in Jurassic Park, I sometimes seem to get so preoccupied with whether I could do something that I get bold and don't stop to think if I should do it. Sometimes, hindsight reveals that something I've tried might not have been so right to go ahead with after all. This is why I created the userbox {{user preoccupied}}. Here are some examples of mistaken decisions and "What was I thinking?" moments:

December 22, 2024: Moving the then-draft article about Mr. Beat into the mainspace prematurely. On January 13, 2025, the article was nominated for deletion, and the discussion ended in favor of deletion on February 1 after Mr. Beat himself brought up the discussion page on Bluesky. Although he didn't explicitly ask people to participate, his mention of it on social media arguably constituted off-wiki canvassing as far as Wikipedians were concerned. On February 5, I successfully asked for the article to be restored as a draft, and it sat in draftspace until April 6, 2026, when it was finally reintroduced into the mainspace for good.

April 24, 2025: Making an edit request for a protected template without establishing consensus first. Earlier that day, I had invented {{AfC notice shell}}, which initially contained decline notices inside the banner, which caused them to appear narrower because they are {{ombox}}es, so I proposed adding a wide parameter for {{AfC submission/declined}} that would turn the ombox into a fmbox, but I faced backlash because I didn't establish consensus for that change before making the edit request. In August of that year, I redesigned the template to have decline notices below the banner instead and changed its name to {{AfC notice holder}}, so in hindsight, I never needed to suggest any change to the AfC submission notice template after all.

May 25, 2025: Nominating the article about Kyle Hill for deletion (as it only cited one source at the time) without doing a WP:BEFORE search. As it turns out, AfD is not cleanup, even though it sometimes results in cleanups that save articles.

June 22–23, 2026: Snow closing a move request^[b] hours after I started it, moving Wikipedia:Help, I've been accused of AI! to Wikipedia:Guide to responding to accusations of AI use,^[c] and starting a move review^[d] after some pushback. After receiving comments along the lines of "just undo what you've done if you want to", I subsequently withdrew the move review, restored the project page to its original title, and reopened the RM discussion.

There may also be moments where I come up with a solution in the middle of a predicament and end up wishing that the idea had come to me sooner.

Although I struggle to wait for some long-lasting discussions to be brought to a conclusion, I've also occasionally wanted a discussion to continue for a bit longer, especially if hardly anyone has said anything in it. When someone suggests closing a discussion I've started that hasn't gotten very many responses at all, I tend to be like But I want to know what other people think of this thing first! If this discussion gets closed early, they'll no longer have a chance to say anything here!

I do that instead of submitting drafts and consider speedy and proposed deletions undesirable because I don't want to take only the word of one or two users for it; I prefer for articles to receive scrutiny from several users so that, if an article is deleted, I can potentially learn more about why its subject should continue to be excluded than if I were to have submitted a draft and waited for a review from one user.
