New article name SAM is one of the approach and the en-route aeronavigational aid co-located on the airfield at Eastleigh aiport (Southampton Internatinonal - SOU/EGHI).
It is located approximately 600m ESE of runway 20 threshold and is out of sight of the terminal due to the surrounding trees.
It has multiple functions, including:
- Instrument approach aid to Eastleigh airport (e.g. VOR/DME approach for 02, LOC/DME approach for 20)
- Standard arrival route beacon (STAR via SAM, RNAV STAR via SAM)
- Standard instrument departure beacon from Heathrow (Southampton SID)
- Route marker beacon (e.g. airway N866)
