I feel like one of the main reasons why I've started editing on Wikipedia more often (as well as, say, join WikiProject Vietnam) is because a big pet peeve of mine is finding out that an article and/or several articles (especially ones on my home country) is poorly written, lacking in information or a combination of the two.

Of course, I'd always known that such articles are inevitable on the English Wikipedia and any other language versions of Wikipedia, infact. However, my concern had only risen from the moment the 2025 Vietnamese administrative reforms had taken effect. For those outside Vietnam, you might not even know what it is, nor be aware that such reforms had even taken place at all.
For starters, (as its name suggests) the Vietnamese government had begun initiating various, significant administrative reforms nationwide, which went into effect in July 2025, the most obvious of which was the province merger (reducing the number of provinces/municipalities from 63 to 34).
Changes were made not only to the list of provinces, but also to the system itself. Lower-level subdivisions, such as districts / urban districts, villages, towns, provincial/municipal cities, etc... were abolished, leaving only wards and communes with official status (which they of course, merged).
For instance, Ho Chi Minh City had 312 commune-level divisions prior to reforms. Now, that number is down to 168.
Of course, I had mixed feelings about the reforms then. Aside from disliking certain aspects of the reforms themselves (Why would they abolish provincial cities? Why merge/not merge like this?), I also stressed about how much of a pain-in-the-arse it would be to update thousands upon thousands of articles on Vietnam's subdivisions on the Vietnamese Wikipedia, let alone the English Wikipedia.[2]
And, boy, I was right. Even up to a year later, multiple articles on the English Wikipedia still offer outdated information on various former districts (huyện), provincial cities (thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh), district-level towns (thị xã), etc. On the other hand, a majority of the articles of the newly-established communes / wards are often mass-produced stubs (or, in some cases, just don't exist at all).
Instead of just waiting for someone to contribute these articles, why not try to contribute to it myself? Not that I don't ever struggle with doing so, but why not just try and learn my way through? What a totally original experience.
Nowadays, I often do so by:
- translating & converting information from the Vietnamese Wikipedia to the English Wikipedia (or vice versa)
- adding information yet to be mentioned on either language's articles
- contributing to the English article and afterwards translating said info onto the Vietnamese Wikipedia (or vice versa)
- some combination of the above
Otherwise, I also seek to contribute to various Vietnam-related articles lacking in information on both language Wikipedias. And to articles covering Vietnam in other language editions of Wikipedia, I can just pray. I'm guessing most have already catched up to Hà Tây not being a province anymore.
