My Sassy Girl by Kim Ho-sik (김호식)

The term "web novel" (wepsoseol) gained currency in South Korea after Naver, a portal site, launched Naver Webnovel (Korean: 네이버웹소설; RR: Neibeo Wepsoseol), a genre web novel platform, in 2013. (Previously, Naver launched Naver Webtoon (Korean: 네이버 웹툰; RR: Neibeo Weptun), a webtoon platform, in 2004. Both of these platforms got their names from the English word "web", which in this case was an abbreviation of the term "World Wide Web".)

Before the launch of Naver Webnovel, web novels were referred to in South Korea by terms such as internet novels (Korean: 인터넷 소설; RR: inteonet soseol), online novels (Korean: 온라인 소설; RR: ollain soseol), etc.

Production

[edit]

The film was produced over a six-year period by a team of 680 individuals. Its story focuses on adapting the first chapter of the first volume of Toemarok (lit.'A Record of Exorcism'[1]), with the team wanting to emphasize the bond between the four lead characters.[2] Real natural landscapes and buildings were used as the basis for animating the setting. The team deliberately excluded the use of artificial intelligence during the film's production.[2]

South Korean web fiction (Korean: 대한민국 웹소설; RR: Daehanminguk wepsoseol), more commonly known in South Korea simply as wepsoseol (Korean: 웹소설), is fiction that is produced, distributed, and consumed in the online space of South Korea. It is often referred to as Korean web novels, even though it includes not only web novels but also web novellas and web short stories.

Web novels in South Korea (Korean: 웹소설; Hanja: 웹小說; RR: Wepsoseol; "web novel; web fiction") have been growing in popularity in the 21st century. Among e-publishing fields, web novels are the core contents that are leading the e-book market. Just as webtoons (online comics) grew in the early 2000s in South Korea, web novels have been growing rapidly since the 2010s.[26]

Etymology

[edit]

The term wepsoseol (Korean: 웹소설), or wep soseol (Korean: 웹 소설), comes from the word wep (Korean: ), which is the Korean reading of the English word "Web", and the word soseol (Korean: 소설; Hanja: 小說; MR: sosŏl)[27][28][29], which is the Korean reading of the Chinese word xiǎoshuō (Chinese: 小說), which in China, Korea, and Japan refers to both novels and prose fiction of any length.[30][31] (See also East Asian definition of the novel.)

In Korea and Japan, very short stories [ko][32] stand out as a separate genre.[33] Depending on their length, Korean works in the genre of soseol can be divided into novels (Korean: 장편 소설; Hanja: 長篇小說; RR: jangpyeon soseol; MR: changp'yŏn sosŏl; lit. 'full-length novel')[34][35], novellas (Korean: 중편 소설; Hanja: 中篇小說; RR: jungpyeon soseol; MR: chungp'yŏn sosŏl; lit. 'midlength novel')[36], short stories (Korean: 단편 소설; Hanja: 短篇小說; RR: danpyeon soseol; MR: tanp'yŏn sosŏl; lit. 'short novel')[37][38], and very short stories (Korean: 콩트; RR: kongteu; MR: k'ongt'ŭ; from French conte [fr][39][40]; Korean: 장편 소설; Hanja: 掌篇小說; RR: jangpyeon soseol; MR: changp'yŏn sosŏl; lit. 'a novel the size of a palm of a hand'[41]; or Korean: 엽편 소설; Hanja: 葉篇小說; RR: yeoppyeon soseol; MR: yŏpp'yŏn sosŏl; lit. 'a novel the size of a tree leaf'[42]).[43] (See also East Asian definition of the novel.)

The Korean term soseol may correspond to the following terms in some Western countries:

KoreaItalySpainFranceGermanyEngland
medieval soseolromanzoromanceromanRomanromance
modern soseolromanzonovelaromanRomannovel
short soseolnovellacuentonouvelle, conteNovelleshort story

Standard Korean Language Dictionary lists soseol as a synonym for iyagi (Korean: 이야기; MR: iyagi), but English-Korean dictionaries translate soseol into English as both "novel" and "fiction", and they translate iyagi as both "narrative" and "story".

The term "novel" is translated from English to Korean as jangpyeon soseol (Korean: 장편 소설; lit. 'long length novel'), the term "novella" is translated as jungpyeon soseol (Korean: 중편 소설; lit. 'medium length novel'), the term "short story" is translated as danpyeon soseol (Korean: 단편 소설; lit. 'short length novel'), and the term "fiction" is translated as heogu (Korean: 허구; Hanja: 虛構; MR: hŏgu). At the same time, the term heogu is translated from Korean into English as both "fiction" and "lie".

The term wepsoseol (Korean: 웹소설) comes from the word wep (Korean: ), which is the Korean reading of the English word "Web", and the word soseol (Korean: 소설; Hanja: 小說; MR: sosŏl)[44][45], which is the Korean reading of the Chinese word xiaoshuo (Chinese: 小說; pinyin: xiǎoshuō)[46].

Urimalsaem, an online dictionary of the Korean language, defines wep soseol (Korean: 웹 소설; lit. 'web novel; web fiction') as soseol (Korean: 소설; lit. 'novel; fiction') that is published in parts on the Internet. [47]

Jeong Hyeongcheol (Korean: 정형철), in his 1997 article What is Hyperfiction? (Korean: 하이퍼픽션이란 무엇인가; RR: Haipeopiksyeoniran mueosinga), reports that the seven works called wepsoseol (Korean: 웹소설; lit. 'web novel; web fiction') that Kim Yeonggwan (Korean: 김영관) posted on his home page on the World Wide Web, as well as the works posted by members of the literary club on Unitel [ko], can be printed and read, and are therefore digitized fiction, not hyperfiction. Unitel, according to Jeong Hyeongcheol, also has serialized works and exchanges of opinions about works, but it does not have hyperfiction in the strict sense of the word.[48]

According to Urimalsaem, an online dictionary of the Korean language, literature that is produced, distributed and consumed on the Internet is called "cyber literature" (Korean: 사이버 문학; Hanja: 사이버文學; RR: saibeo munhak). And the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, in turn, specifies that cyber literature includes literary forms such as soseol (Korean: 소설; lit. 'novel; fiction'), si (Korean: ; lit. 'poem; poetry'), and supil (Korean: 수필; lit. 'essay'), and it also reports that South Korean cyber literature of the 1990s is called "computer communication literature" because in the 1990s, South Korean cyber writers posted their works on bulletin board systems (BBS) of South Korean computer communications services [ko] such as "Chollian" [ko], "HiTEL" [ko], "Nownuri" [ko] and "Unitel" [ko].

In South Korea, wep soseol (Korean: 웹 소설; lit. 'web novel; web fiction'), also known as wepsoseol (Korean: 웹소설), is a type of soseol (Korean: 소설; lit. 'novel; narrative prose fiction') and does not include other forms of web literature such as web comics, web poetry, and web essays, but there are many opinions on what wepsoseol is: "any web fiction", "serialized web fiction", "paid web fiction", "smartphone web fiction", or "genre web fiction", and how it is related to inteonet soseol (Korean: 인터넷 소설; lit. 'internet novel; internet fiction'). This situation is due to the fact that the term wep soseol supposedly originated from the term "webtoon" (Korean: 웹툰; RR: weptun), which refers to web comics for smartphones.

Urimalsaem, an online dictionary of the Korean language, defines wep soseol (Korean: 웹 소설; lit. 'web novel; web fiction') as soseol (Korean: 소설; Hanja: 小說; lit. 'novel; fiction[49]') that is serialized on the Internet.[50] The same dictionary defines inteonet soseol (Korean: 인터넷 소설; lit. 'internet novel; internet fiction') as soseol that is posted on the Internet for users to read.[51]

Interwiki links connect entries, categories, templates and other pages on Wiktionary to their equivalents on other Wiktionary projects (such as the French Wiktionary). This is similar to how they work in Wikipedia, Wikiquote and other projects. For most users, these links display to the left of the page content in a section entitled "in other languages". The links appear as the native name of the language in which the target page is written. Unique to Wiktionary, however, is that entries of the dictionary always interwiki link to identically-named entries, e.g. mare on English Wiktionary links to mare on French Wiktionary, not to the French translation of that English word (as would have been the case in Wikipedia).

The maintenance of these links in Wiktionary changed radically in the summer of 2017. Before, the links were wikitext at the end of each page, maintained by bots. Now, entry interwiki links (to all existing identically-named entries) are created automatically by means of Mediawiki extension Cognate, while interwiki links to categories, templates and other pages (such as this one) are stored in Wikidata (just like Wikipedia's interwiki links).

To make a link in a Wiktionary article to the Wikipedia article (especially in the case where there is no Wiktionary article for the subject of the link), use this code: example.

To link to the "surfeit" Wiktionary entry from Wikipedia, you would include the wikilink markup wikt:surfeit which would appear as wikt:surfeit or the wikilink markup surfeit which would appear as surfeit.

Welcome (Wiktionary)

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

 • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
 • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
 • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
 • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
 • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
 • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Chihunglu83 (talk) 14:34, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

History

[edit]

The term "web novel" (wepsoseol) gained currency in South Korea after Naver, a portal site, launched Naver Web Novel (네이버웹소설; Neibeowebsoseol), a genre web novel platform, in 2013.[58] (Previously, Naver launched Naver Webtoon (네이버 웹툰; Neibeo Weptun), a webtoon platform, in 2004. Both of these platforms got their names from the English word "web", which in this case was an abbreviation of the term "World Wide Web".) Before the launch of Naver Web Novel, web novels were referred to in South Korea by terms such as "internet novels" (인터넷 소설; inteonet soseol), "online novels" (온라인 소설; ollain soseol), etc. Currently, the term "web novel" (wepsoseol) is used in both industrial and academic fields.[26]

A light novel (Japanese: ライトノベル, Hepburn: raito noberu) is a type of popular literature novel from Japan usually classified as young adult fiction, generally targeting teens to twenties or older. The definition is very vague, and wide-ranging.[59][60]

Retrieved 2025-03-21 via DBpia.
