The Healthy Indian Project (THIP)[1] is an Indian healthcare information and fact-checking organization operated by THIP Healthtech Private Limited.[2][3][4][5]
History
[edit]The Healthy Indian Project was established in 2019 as a health information initiative in India. According to Startup India,[6] it operates as a registered entity under the Government of India’s Startup India programme. In June 2021, The Times of India reported that The Healthy Indian Project was selected as a third-party fact-checking partner for Facebook (now Meta) in India.[7] The report stated that the organization’s role involved reviewing and identifying health-related misinformation circulating on the platform, forming part of Facebook’s broader third-party fact-checking programme in India.[8]
Operations
[edit]The organisation’s health information division, THIP Media, is listed as a member of the World Health Organization’s Vaccine Safety Net, a global network of websites providing reliable vaccine safety information.[9][10]
THIP Media is also a signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network(IFCN) Code of Principles, administered by the Poynter Institute.[11]
Media coverage
[edit]In 2024, Channel NewsAsia featured The Healthy Indian Project in its documentary Fact vs Fiction – India’s Disinformation War, which examined misinformation in India and referenced the organisation’s work on health-related misinformation.[12][13][14][15]
Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2024, The Healthy Indian Project received the Best Health Literacy Platform award at the Atal Samman Samaroh 2024. Coverage of the award was reported by The Week.[16]
In the same year, Ask RAKSHA, a WhatsApp-based health information chatbot developed by THIP Media, was named Health Solution of the Year at the Economic Times HealthWorld Nutrition & Wellness Awards 2024.[17][18]
