History of sugar cane and sugar

Sugar page is missing a huge component of its important history that needs to be written here.

Sugar page is missing the domestication of sugar cane in New Guinea by Papuans and in South China and Taiwan by Austronesians. This through both recent archaeological and especially genetic evidence has established to be where sugar cane was domesticated and sugar first used. And Indian sugar cane S.barberi as noted by Paterson etc (2012) was only cultivated after S. officinarum and possibly S. sinense was spread through Austronesian traders.

This is the established consensus and it was Papuans and Austronesians who first used us sugar before spreading it. As such this should absolutely be mentioned in history and is anything is very misleading otherwise.

The Sources thats claims sugar cane and sugar was first used in India uses old and outdated sources that largely rely on written evidence such as ancient Chinese source.

As such I have re written this history page with extra information and it should be kept as this is the established consensus of history.

As always a further reading can be done in history of sugar where this has already been written out. I will also provided the source listed for further reading

Further reading and editing should be looked into regarding the origin of granulated crystals as some sources suggest it was already used by Papuans and Austronesians as noted in source 4 and 2 (the process itself is relatively simple so this wouldn’t be too surprising). However the first written and conclusive evidence comes from ancient India.

I will list both theories for this as there is no consensus however further research should be done for granulated crystals especially regarding the possibility of their earlier use predating written records in India to further improve this page. Herbou7 (talk) 10:51, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
