Age-specific Language

[edit]

This article frequently refers to individuals as "children" in discussing the application of PBS, which is inappropriate given that PBS is also used in providing services to adults. ---MW--- (talk) 13:27, 8 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

We have some great contributions, but we need some help with the citing...also, we probably should break up the huge amount of text into relevant sections.Josh.Pritchard.DBA (talk) 21:07, 22 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

IS PBS ABA?

[edit]

Someone inserted the word "not", to reverse the meaning of the first sentence Positive Behaviour Support is a form of Applied Behaviour Analysis. It may be ok to introduce the controversy raised by Johnston,Foxx and others later in the piece, but this would need to be counterbalanced with the opinion of the majority of people who practice PBS (e.g. LaVigna and Willis, 2012).It is contentious that Positive Behaviour Support is not applied behaviour analysis. Citing controversialist opinion pieces as justification for the assertion that PBS is not ABA seems to lack balance.

You are correct. PBS/PBIS is a subtype of ABA that focuses primarily on encouraging compliance in institutional settings, such as primary and secondary schools. It purportedly works by conditioning people to expect tangible rewards and/or public recognition for acts of responsibility, kindness, achievement, etc. Boiled down, it's a rejection of altruism and an embrace of transactionality. Under PBS/PBIS, no good deed is done for its own sake; it's only done because it will be witnessed and rewarded. How this supposedly fosters any kind of emotional growth or prepares children to thrive in a world where they won't always receive such external validation is an open question.
Because mainstream ABA practitioners have spent decades almost exclusively marketing what they do as a cure for autism, those who have chosen to specialize in PBS/PBIS have made a concerted effort to market their brand of ABA differently (usually not referencing ABA or autism at all), so that they can more easily sell their product en masse to overly credulous school administrators. Secondary and tertiary forms of PBS/PBIS that focus on students who don't respond to the initial drown-them-with-rewards strategy more obviously resemble mainstream ABA (e.g., the use of individualized FBAs).
Since you posted this comment over a decade ago, the article's short description and lead have been changed to mention that PBS/PBIS is a form of ABA, which is factually congruent (although the current lead seems to beat around the bush a little by stating PBS/PBIS uses "tools" from ABA). As you mentioned, anyone who wants to remove all reference to ABA or explicitly state that PBS/PBIS is not a form of ABA needs much stronger citational backing than what was previously offered. This is so poorly written!

[edit]

PBS is not "used to understand what maintains an individual's challenging behavior." Its purpose is to modify the behavior and understanding the behavior is a component, not the purpose. Terms like "challenging behavior," "inappropriate behavior," and "undersirable behavior" need to be defined. The article also focuses too much on children. PBS is widely used with adults.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.133.71 (talk) 19:05, 8 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Apparent contradiction

[edit]

One paragraph states

  • Schools are required to conduct functional behavioral assessment (FBA)

and, later

* Even though FBA is required under limited circumstances

These seem to contradict each other. Is it required, or just under limited circumstances? If someone familiar with FBA in the US can clarify, that'd be great WotherspoonSmith (talk) 12:22, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
