spermine/spermidine pathway byproduct is MTA, not SAM

The image depicting the pathway for biosynthesis of spermine and spermidine from putrescine has 2 mistakes in the form of SAM being listed as a byproduct of the reaction rather than MTA (5'-methylthioadenosine). Minor remarks to add are that the protein names are somewhat blurry and difficult to read with the abbreviations and lack of spacing. 128.249.1.194 (talk) 19:43, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Page scope: 2+ vs. 3+ amine groups

From what I can find, the word "polyamine" isn't defined or used consistently. Many dictionaries state it as 2+ amine groups, and others state it means any "H₂N(CH₂)_nNH₂" and similar molecules with more inserted amine groups. I don't see many claims that it means 3+ amine groups, but on the other hand, it would be a bit weird to call a Glutamine a "polyamine". In practice, I suspect it is just means "Spermidine", "Spermine", and anything similar, with "putrescine" and "cadaverine" being grey zones.

On second look, I change my mind. Searching google scholar for polyamine, every single one of the top 10 results said 2+ amine groups or mentioned putrescine as a polyamine. Similarly, I did not find any dictionaries that said it was 3+ amines, so while the name's usage is a bit fuzzy, I think it clearly doesn't mean 3+ amines in common usage. I think the function of putrescine is just too closely related to spermine/spermidine to make that distinction Pabnau (talk) 20:04, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
