Beware dictionaries
[edit]Be careful when adding refs to dictionaries, such as Peirameter, Webster's, 1913 and later: written by non-tecnical people, they produce "Chinese whispers": not "roads of different constructions", as they say but, "carriages of different constructions". --Altenmann >talk 23:47, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
Purpose?

- No. The article clearly says this early tool was only for side-by-side comparison, no absolute numbers. Macneill's road indicator gave the absolute force. --Altenmann >talk 05:04, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe your reference to such a gadget might fit better into Coachbuilder or History of horse-drawn transport. instead of Carriage. ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 05:07, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't add it to "carriage"; I merely noticed it sitting there with wrong definition. The term is specifically related to carriages, so IMO it is relevant there. But we may alo add it somewhere in History of horse-drawn transport. I don't think "coachbuilder" is a proper place. --Altenmann >talk 05:14, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
- Correct; you didn't add it there. I've noticed that whole section in Carriage has gone off into the weeds over the years and become a catch-all. I'm working on building a well-cited glossary for carriage and driving terminology. Long overdue. ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 05:33, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
