Pictures

[edit]

Do we really need so many pictures of laptops? I'd say maybe two current and two vintage models would suffice but 15 is a little excessive, don't you think? And that's just the ones primarily showing laptops. MightyArms (talk) 12:26, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

The description of the first picture says the first laptop (going around clockwise from the left) is a 2020 MacBook Air model. The description must be changed to 2021 MacBook Pro model to match the image. Razmik Vardanyan (talk) 00:13, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

What is a "Laptop" (or Notebook)

[edit]

Is the Surface (in the article) a Laptop? If so, is the iPad a laptop? As soon as you attach a keyboard cover, what differentiate a Surface (I'm not talking about the Surface Book here) from an iPad? (And no, the kippstand doesn't make it a Laptop for me. Try to work "on your lap" with that thing.) Alien4 (talk) 15:23, 27 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

The first sentence says it all: A laptop is a small, portable personal computer (PC). The Microsoft Surface is a personal computer. The iPad is an iPhone that Apple sees fit to pretend is a personal computer. That is the difference. OmegaAOLtalk? 01:05, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Add A Fact: "Toshiba revives UMPC with Libretto W100"

[edit]

I found a fact that might belong in this article. See the quote below

Simply put, Toshiba has brought back the UMPC (ultra mobile PC) concept with two multi-touch 7-inch displays. This pup, coming on the 25th anniversary of Toshiba's entry to the laptop market, has some interesting features and generated some initial buzz. Toshiba bills calls the device the Libretto W100 and says it ”goes beyond slates, netbooks and smartphones to deliver something more.”

The fact comes from the following source:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/toshibas-libretto-w100-interesting-concept-but-questions-abound/

Here is a wikitext snippet to use as a reference:

Additional comments from user: The libretto, was one of the first dual screen laptops alongside the acer iconia. Testing the add a fact extension.

LaptopLaptop computer – Common name and better title. Similar to the articles of Desktop computer and Tablet computer. AimanAbir18plus (talk) 13:46, 22 November 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). JJPMaster (she/they) 14:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose as unnecessary WP:PRECISION, which states ...titles should unambiguously define the topical scope of the article, but should be no more precise than that. See also WP:CONCISE: The goal of concision is to balance brevity with sufficient information to identify the topic to a person familiar with the general subject area.

This article is also the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, so no further dab needed. The only other items listed at Laptop (disambiguation) are a band and two films. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 17:40, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oppose, what else would laptop refer to? In fact the only things that appear on Laptop (disambiguation) is Laptop (band) a redirect page Laptop (2008 film) and Laptop (2012 film) all of witch I think the user would specify while typing "laptop" the argument of desktop computer and tablet computer why not laptop computer also falls flat as tablet can mean Clay tablet and desktop can mean well the top of a Desk DYC TY (talk) 03:03, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oppose, consistency isn't really something covered in electronic naming conventions. 107.19.1.83 (talk) 00:15, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

debatably "obsolete features"

[edit]

debatably "obsolete features"

usb-a - new modern devices are still manufactured even by big brand names and despite regulatory requirements

hdmi - new versions of hdmi are continuously introduced and wireless streaming is still niche. despite not being a constant necessity for most use cases it is definitely not obsolete

sd card slot - as new professional and widespread consumer hardware is still introduced with standard sd as its main media the media type is not going away from laptops anytime soon

charging port - there are not as many present-day laptops which support usb-c charging as there are which have dedicated external power supplies with power-only connectors

for all of these, except for usb-a, we can generally follow what apple has shown with their modification progression of laptop ports over the years as they have generally been a leader - they were the main brand to drop the floppy drive and introduce the cd drive, which was just an outdated media format. later they tried to force usb-c, but all their desktops still featured it until recent years since the industry has been very slow to adapt and is still struggling which i presume has a bit to do with licensing and standardization. 2603:8001:6301:5A62:F805:D92C:2672:D86 (talk) 04:59, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. OmegaAOLtalk? 20:11, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also, wireless streaming is not the replacement for HDMI (on non-HDMI-compatible laptops). Its replacement is Thunderbolt 4 (DisplayPort) served over USB-C. OmegaAOLtalk? 01:08, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Serial ports, PS/2 ports, and the ExpressCard were removed because USB-A could fulfill that functionality by itself. Similiarly, HDMI ports and charging ports are being replaced because USB-C can fulfill those functionalities. OmegaAOLtalk? 01:09, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
