Is there an official source for the Magatama resemblance? Was the Magatama supposed to be an inspiration for the logo design?

Gentoo Wiki data loss?

The Gentoo wiki (or a widely used unofficial Gentoo wiki) suffered a catastrophic data loss in 2008. As the wiki seemed to have had a large influence as a wiki and as a failure-of-backups incident/lore, perhaps it could be documented here? Unfortunately I don't know more about it, and have been unable to find other sources (though I am sure they exist) other than the following Reddit thread:
