Shortcuts

Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

Instructions for editors

There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

  1. Proposed additions
  2. Proposed removals
  3. Troubleshooting and problems
  4. Discussion

Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

  1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
  2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
  3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages.)
  4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regular expressions — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
  5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
  6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number – 1329527056 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

@Ivanvector Levantiques has contribs on other wikis and that link has been spammed elsewhere. I'm wondering if this might be better on Meta but then it seems like an enwiki problem that has almost accidentally spread to Commons and Wikidata. @Beetstra, what do you think? They all link to apparently different scam apps, but each landing page is identical in design, fonts and layout. Reported at meta, and globally blocked there. I believe, without evidence I admit, that (most?) good faith editors reporting spam here could use a WP:TLAs explanation link of how reporting "globally" works at least, as it's a steep learning curve if you're a single-wiki editor and suddenly have to plunge into the entire Wikimedia ecosystem just because you wanted to help out. It feels something of a criticism to report persistent spam here on en.wp and be told by template that you need to go to a different wiki that you've never encountered before and use a different system with different people to get something done, at the risk of – Commons style – being flayed alive for not adhering to their local style. Unfortunately, I do not know how our website is connected with someone named Fedrikcethorn569, but this is definitely damaging our reputation. As a representative of the company, I can say that 1dayrefinishing.com is the website of a legitimate, long‑standing local hardwood floor refinishing business serving various cities in the USA and Canada. There is no evidence of the site being involved in spam, link schemes, or content farming. All outgoing links and content are strictly moderated. It is interesting that someone else must submit the request to remove our site from the blacklist, but who else besides the site owners would care to do this in your opinion? Maybe the spammer because of whom we ended up there will come and ask for request as apologize, but surely he has also been blocked?
Wikipedia has always been a source of knowledge and information through open collaboration and has been praised for enabling the democratization of knowledge. Yet it turns out that someone can arbitrarily ruin a company's reputation and you cannot do anything about it. The situation is such that we have no way to defend ourselves - what kind of fairness and equality can be spoken of then? You've still not read the instructions above as it relates to what we're looking for. This is a preventative measure; in looking through the logs, it has indeed prevented additional spamming recently. Perhaps I am mistaken, and these preventative measures are indeed relevant to you, but I would still prefer not to see our site listed among spammers and therefore unreliable sites.
As for current usage, at this time 1DAY Refinishing company has neither been mentioned nor attempted to present itself as a source anywhere at Wikipedia. We simply hope to have a company page someday, which is why it is discouraging to encounter the issue of our site being added to the blacklist. @1dayrefinishing: Some points here:
  • We are rarely concerned who is spamming something, the problem is that there are sites which are pushed to Wikipedia and which are, in that form, unwanted. This site was spammed, and we don't care whether it is the site owner, an overactive member of their staff, their SEO, another company, random schoolkids or whoever, we care that it stops. If that concerns, like here, multiple accounts, we blacklist.
  • You site is listed among spam, but also among other sites which fail inclusion standards which in itself have nothing to do with spam (e.g. redirect sites like tinyurl or the majority of adult websites and petition sites, all of which are NOT blacklisted for spam reasons). If any external site would judge your site by being on this list they would make a grave mistake.
  • We are not entertaining requests from anyone close to the site, or who does not have a significant (and broad) editing history. We rely on users who have a signiciant editing history, along with reasons that a site is of widespread use, and that abuse has actually stopped (last attempt was a mere 2 weeks ago: ). Otherwise, maybe individual whitelist requests (as long as they do not allow for abuse to continue) or an outright 'no'.

Illuminem is a sustainability-focused publication that hosts articles and commentary written by identifiable academics, policy specialists, and industry practitioners. The site is editorial in nature, with clear authorship and attribution.

Because the domain is currently blacklisted, it is not possible to cite or quote these contributors on Wikipedia, even where their analysis or commentary would otherwise be relevant and verifiable for sustainability-related topics. The discussion at MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist/archives/September 2022 § illuminem.com shows that the illuminem.com domain has been promoted in a link-spamming campaign involving seven accounts. The website is a news aggregator, and most of the links on the home page are to mainstream news sources which are not on the spam blacklist. The articles that are actually hosted on Illuminem's website are from their contributor network. A spot check indicates that the authors tend to publish the same content that is hosted on Illuminem on other platforms as well, such as LinkedIn Pulse, which is also not on the spam blacklist. If you would like to cite an article that is only hosted on Illuminem, please submit a whitelisting request for the specific article. — Newslinger talk 20:22, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Request for removal of thepointsguy.com from blacklist

"TPG" was added to the blacklist seven years ago. Apparently there was a (minor?) issue with spamming, potentially by undisclosed paid editors, but the actual requests limited themselves to TPG's content (1, 2). It was not removed from the list in 2019 despite two requests to do so (1 and 2). I don't think there's any evidence to indicate that spamming would reemerge in 2025, and over at RSN a TPG website rep has said that they both have no knowledge of undisclosed previous paid editing and had no intention of doing so in the future. Still, if new spamming is a concern, it would be trivial to set up an edit filter to monitor it.

Note that the website's current articles are likely unreliable per a larger RSN concern with TPG's owner (see WP:REDVENTURES). But non-advertorial articles published before TPG's acquisition could be reliable in some contexts, per a 2019 RSN discussion, and in any case the spam blacklist is not for content concerns ("The bar for blacklisting is whether a site was spammed to Wikipedia, or otherwise abused, not whether the content of the site is 'spammy' or unreliable. Please indicate why you expect that that abuse has stopped." (Emphasis in original.)

That second request (a whitelisting request from 2019) was submitted by me, so I am noting for the record that I no longer support the whitelisting request and that I oppose removing The Points Guy (TPG) from the spam blacklist for the reasons I mentioned in the noticeboard discussion. Compared to 2018–2019, TPG still primarily publishes credit card advertorials, but is additionally now owned and operated by the LLM-generated content publisher Red Ventures. Historically, websites are not removed from the spam blacklist unless the spam is unlikely to continue and the website is likely to be be used in an appropriate way on Wikipedia, outside of the article about the website itself. (Whether a website is "spammy" or unreliable is not the main criterion used for adding the website to the spam blacklist, but this is still considered for whether the website is removed from the spam blacklist or added to the spam whitelist.) Any news articles published by TPG prior to its acquisition by Red Ventures can still be considered for whitelisting if there is consensus that it is reliable and appropriately used, which would mean that the article cannot be related to credit cards or any other topic for which TPG has an apparent conflict of interest. — Newslinger talk 12:31, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
The ed17, I just spent an hour reviewing my edits from the week TPG was added to the spam blacklist (December 2018), all the way back to my very first edit in April 2018, and I was not able to find additional edits related to the spam blacklist request. Because of this, and given that TPG appears to have switched from undisclosed to disclosed paid editing, I am withdrawing my opposition to the removal of TPG from the spam blacklist. If the site does get removed from the blacklist, I believe the best path forward would be a request for comment on WP:RSN to update the consensus on TPG's reliability to account for its ownership by Red Ventures.
