Phoebe Chiku Chikaonda is a Malawian politician who became the MP for Ntchisi East in the 2025 election.
Life
[edit]Chikaonda had stood in Ntchisi East as a candidate in 2018 for the United Democratic Front but she was last with 6% of the 17,000 votes. The winning candidate was William Kalima of the MCP who had more than 40% of the vote.[1]
She was one of the women supported by the Gender Coordination Network as a prospective politician for the 2025 election. She stood and was elected in the Ntchisi East Constituency beating five other candidates.[2] That constituency had never before chosen a woman as their member of parliament.[3] The percentage of women in parliament did see a small increase in 2025 and she was part of that. She was one of the successful independent women candidates that also included Madalitso Baloyi, Hope Tionge, Rhita Sanga, Khadija Chunga, Amina Kajiya, Abigail Shariff and Ireen Mambala.[4]
In 2026 it was announced by the Speaker that she had joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The DPP was the largest and governing party.[5]
