Omniverse is a platform developed by Nvidia for building and running real-time 3D simulation and digital twin applications, marketed by the company as an "operating system" for physical AI and industrial digitalization.[1][2] Built around Pixar's Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) format, Omniverse lets applications from different vendors share a common 3D scene so that geometry, materials, and physics data created in one tool can be viewed and edited in another.[3] It was originally positioned as a real-time collaboration and rendering tool for visual-effects and design teams, and has since been repositioned around industrial digital-twin construction, robotics and autonomous-vehicle simulation, and synthetic data generation for training AI models.[4][5]
History
[edit source]Nvidia unveiled Omniverse at its GTC event in March 2019 as an "open collaboration" platform intended to link different 3D production tools together.[6] An open beta for individual creators followed later that year, after an early-access period with studios and companies including Ericsson, Foster + Partners, and Lucasfilm.[7]
In April 2021, Nvidia launched Omniverse Enterprise, a paid version of the platform aimed at companies such as BMW, Foster + Partners, and WPP, which had been evaluating it for uses such as building digital twins of active factories.[8][9] At CES in January 2022, Nvidia announced that Omniverse had exited beta and would be made available free of charge to individual users.[10] By GTC in March 2022, Nvidia said companies including Amazon Robotics, PepsiCo, and Kroger were using Omniverse Enterprise to build digital twins, and the platform had accumulated close to a million Omniverse-ready 3D assets alongside live-sync connections to tools such as Adobe Substance 3D and Unreal Engine.[10]
Since 2024–2025, Nvidia has increasingly described Omniverse as an "operating system" connecting physical-world data to AI systems, expanding its Blueprints program and partnerships across industrial software vendors.[2]
Technology
[edit source]OpenUSD and the Kit SDK
[edit source]Omniverse is built around Universal Scene Description (branded by Nvidia as OpenUSD), which provides a shared scene-graph format that different 3D applications can read from and write to.[3] The Omniverse Kit SDK is a Python- and C++-based framework that developers use to build custom OpenUSD applications and services, combining Nvidia-supplied and custom extensions.[3] A related set of tools, OpenUSD Connections and Data Exchange (formerly Omniverse Connect), provides importers, exporters, and file-format plug-ins that let third-party 3D software exchange data with Omniverse via USD.[3]
Rendering, physics, and simulation
[edit source]Omniverse renders scenes in real time using Nvidia's RTX technology, combining ray tracing with sensor-simulation features used to generate synthetic sensor data for training and testing AI models.[5] Physical interactions are simulated with GPU-accelerated libraries, including PhysX and Nvidia Warp, which the company says allows scalable modelling of rigid- and soft-body dynamics, fluids, and other physical behaviour.[5]
Blueprints and Cosmos integration
[edit source]Nvidia Omniverse Blueprints are pre-built, customizable reference workflows — combining services, sample code, documentation, and deployment configurations — intended to help enterprise developers build 3D, simulation, and digital-twin applications more quickly.[3] Some Blueprints connect to Nvidia's Cosmos world-foundation models to support tasks such as preparing facilities for robot deployment and generating large volumes of synthetic training data for physical-AI systems.[2]
Deployment
[edit source]Omniverse applications can run locally on RTX-equipped workstations or be deployed as containers through the Nvidia NGC catalog on public clouds such as AWS and Microsoft Azure.[11] Kit App Streaming allows an Omniverse Kit application to be streamed from the cloud through a Kubernetes-based service and embedded in custom web clients via streaming APIs.[11] For large organizations, Nvidia also offers a managed deployment option through its DGX systems.[11]
Industry adoption
[edit source]Nvidia has said that industrial software and services companies — including Ansys, Databricks, Dematic, Omron, SAP, Schneider Electric (through its ETAP unit), and Siemens — have integrated Omniverse into their own products to support industrial digitalization.[2] According to market-research firm FitGap, Omniverse held the largest share among large enterprises (5,001+ employees) in the 3D modeling software category as of 2026, with particular strength in information technology, banking and insurance, transportation and logistics, and agriculture.[4] The same analysis notes that Omniverse is designed as a connective layer between existing 3D tools rather than as a primary modeling application, and does not itself provide functions such as digital sculpting, parametric modeling, or NURBS surface modeling.[4]
Third-party Integrations
[edit source]Omniverse supports integration with external computer-aided design tools through third-party connectors. For example, academic work has demonstrated a connector linking Omniverse with the open-source CAD system FreeCAD, enabling collaborative access to CAD geometry via the Omniverse Nucleus server and extending Omniverse usage beyond media and entertainment workflows.[12] Nvidia has also announced connectors and integrations with other third-party tools such as Blender and Adobe products.[13]
