N Rashed Chowdhury (Bengali: এন রাশেদ চৌধুরী) is a Bangladeshi filmmaker, director, producer. He directed the feature film Chandrabati Kotha (The Tales of Chandrabati), which received a Government of Bangladesh National Filmmaking Grant and premiered at the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival.[1][2] He is a co-founder and director of Dhaka DocLab and served as director of the Bangladesh International Short and Independent Film Festival, Dhaka.[3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Chowdhury joined the Bangladesh Short Film Forum during high school in the early 1990s.[1][3] He also participated in the Film Society Movement of Bangladesh.[3][1]
Career
[edit]Chowdhury served as President of the Bangladesh Short Film Forum and directed the Bangladesh International Short and Independent Film Festival, twice.[3][5] He led the festival committee for its 15th edition in 2019.[6] In 2017, he co-founded Dhaka DocLab, a South Asian documentary film market, where he works as a director and workshop mentor.[3][7][8]
He served as executive producer for the 2014 film Meghmallar, directed by Zahidur Rahim Anjan.[9]
His debut feature, Chandrabati Kotha (The Tales of Chandrabati), received a Government of Bangladesh National Grant for 2014–2015.[1][2] Chowdhury wrote the screenplay, which focuses on 16th-century Bengali poet Chandrabati. Filming took place over two years across Mymensingh, Netrokona, and Kishoreganj.[2][10][11] It premiered at the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival in 2019 and was released in Bangladesh in 2021.[2][11]
His second feature film, Shokhi Rongomala (also spelled Sokhi Rongomala), is based on Shaheen Akhtar's novel set in 18th-century Noakhali, starring Nazifa Tushi.[12]
From October to December 2020, Chowdhury was a virtual resident at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.[1]
