Adding shortnames to Indian political parties

[edit source]

None of the Indian political parties have common shortnames added to them. Even the ones that are very popular. As I unilaterally added the shortnames of a few parties as per WP:Bold, they were reverted. Therefore, starting a discussion.

Adding shortnames for the respective parties

Manasbose (talk) 12:24, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oppose. Out of thousands of political parties in India, why only these 6? 4 of these parties don't even exist anymore. Communist Party of India (Marxist) is often referred as (CPM). Following common names for only 2 of the parties will break current naming convention for Indian parties who are all listed with the acronyms of their official names. Bharatiya Janata Party is also commonly called as BHAJPA. Why it shouldn't be changed as well? Kalpesh Manna 2002 (talk) 13:35, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
WP:Common Name is priority as per Wikipedia guidelines.
That's the reason why the Article All India Trinamool Congress was renamed as just Trinamool Congress.
As for why only few parties should have it, this is common practice in all countrie. (Example: Liberal Democratic Party (Japan) only has acronym LDP, while Centrist Reform Alliance has shortname Centrist Reform.)
Also, Bhajapa is just Hindi acronym, and BJP is far more commonly used. Manasbose (talk) 05:01, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
On what basis you're trying to establish the common names for the parties? What are the sources about the claim? You want to change All India Trinamool Congress to Trinamool. While also claiming Trinamool Congress is the common name for the party. This is clearly a violation of Wikipedia:Neutral point of view guidelines. Kalpesh Manna 2002 (talk) 06:15, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Trinamool is the common shortname of Trinamool Congress, which is empty in the module.
And Congress is both the common shortname as well as common name for Indian National Congress.
Hope that helps. Manasbose (talk) 15:24, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
What are the sources backing up this claim? What is the problem in maintaining current version of common standards for all the Indian parties with acronyms? Are you claiming that except these few parties no other Indian parties not have any common names? Kalpesh Manna 2002 (talk) 04:25, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yup.
Same with all other countries as well.
Some parties have common names, while others don't.
Especially INC. No one calls it INC, instead just Congress. Manasbose (talk) 06:01, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Örebro party, party color

[edit source]

Please add the following entry to Module:Political party/O Module:Political party/1:

["Örebro Party"] = {abbrev = "ÖP", color = "#000000", shortname = "Örebro Party",},

Reason: The party is currently missing from the module, causing #000000 to return the default value #F8F9FA. The party article lists black as one of its official colours and uses #000000 as the infobox colorcode.

Thank you! Furgesson (talk) 16:51, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just noting for the sake of completeness: because of the umlaut the name needs to go into the /1 subpage, not /O. Primefac (talk) 16:23, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, editor Primefac! I overlooked this in the /doc. I added this party as an example on the /doc page to help other editors. It should be easier to see and harder to overlook. Thanks again! P.I. Ellsworth, ed.  welcome!  18:35, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Historic United States Political Color Changes

[edit source]

I am interested in possibly changing some of the colors of some of the older United States political parties to colors that those parties actually used/are more accurate. Some examples:

Federalist Party:      (Black was the official color of the Federalists)
Whigs:      (from Yellow to the commonly accepted Buff)
Lastly possibly changing the current color of the Democratic-Republicans   , to one of their official colors of blue or red.

I'd like to know if others agree and I could go ahead with making these changes, or if people disagree/they are two difficult to implement.

Cheers HGP7 (talk) 19:26, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update: I went ahead with the change to the Whigs. Still waiting a bit before the other ones. HGP7 (talk) 19:39, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think they should be changed back, Black and White won't work, and Red and Blue are already the modern colors. I'm a big "if it isn't broken, don't fix it." kind of guy. The Whig yellow is a better contract with the Blue than the Buff was. Maxthecat5905 (talk) 03:06, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also wouldn’t agree with black and white but black and blue could work. HGP7 (talk) 03:19, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
1. I don't think we should use a color one of the two modern parties use.
2. Black is already used in 1788-1789, with New York's failure to send electors. Maxthecat5905 (talk) 03:35, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am fine to keep the D-Rs green, but I don’t think the black would be an issue since there would be a number greater than zero within it. HGP7 (talk) 03:38, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a good source about their offical color being black? Maxthecat5905 (talk) 03:55, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
There are sources in the infobox for the federalist party explaining that plain black cockades were a symbol of the party HGP7 (talk) 03:57, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think we also could have a Chicken or Egg situation (eggs existed before chickens, that always pissed me off) Were they black because of the cockades, or were the cockades black because they were the party color. Maxthecat5905 (talk) 03:59, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
First off, I say the same thing about the chicken and the egg (lol)
I might be misinterpreting your question but there are cockades with plenty different colours but they federalists specifically wore black ones, which was also a symbol of resistance to the french revolution HGP7 (talk) 04:08, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was also due to their desire for closer ties with Britian and (a tad ironically in my book) their loyalty to Washington and the Continental Army.
However, I also think that when picking political party colors, it's good to take into consideration how it looks against other parties. Orange and Green bounce off each other better than Black and Green Maxthecat5905 (talk) 04:18, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
If we are keeping the Federalists black, we should choose a dark grey color like the CDU's #151518 or #18181a in my opinion. It shouldn't be pure black. I could start making presidential election results maps under that color scheme, but non-presidential maps I don't really have the time for right now. Camicomchom (talk) 17:40, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I made a new map for 1796 before realizing that 1800's map is locked and I cannot edit it. If someone with higher access could update the rest, that'd be helpful. Camicomchom (talk) 17:54, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The shade I used was #232326, by the way Camicomchom (talk) 17:55, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
A change like this should probably have broader support before moving forward, in my humble opinion. Judging by the conversation here, editors are still split on whether the Federalist Party color should change at all. (I count two editors broadly in favor and two broadly skeptical or opposed, hardly a landslide in either direction.) Another point I haven't seen mentioned is that using grey to represent the Federalists runs the risk of being confused with territories and other non-voting areas, which are typically shades grey. This is a particular problem for popular vote gradient maps. There are likely hundreds of maps that will need to be updated if this proposal is adopted, so it is important to consider all implications of a change (including readability, consistency, and accessibility) with the merits of any proposal. Nathaniel Greene (talk) 19:41, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Reasonable! My apologies for being hasty. Camicomchom (talk) 20:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Although, if we are going to wait to make maps until a color is decided, we should definitely revert the Federalists' party color to salmon until consensus is reached so that the maps and wikiboxes aren't contradicting. Camicomchom (talk) 20:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Whig (UK) colour

[edit source]

Hi @User:HGP7, I saw you reverted my change to the Whigs (British political party)'s party colour from Buff back to Orange, so I've brought it to the talk page. You've said in your edit summary that you were changing the colour from   #F0DC82, which you said is Yellow, to Buff, but the colour you changed it to,   #FF7F00 seems to be more Orange than Buff. DimensionalFusion (talk) 11:46, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I thought this was a change to the other Whigs. That was my mistake. HGP7 (talk) 15:21, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I actually do agree with changing the colour to Buff, but from the depictions of Whig flags I’ve seen they are perhaps somewhat orange tinted while still mostly Buff, I’ll see if I can get a good hex code from the flags HGP7 (talk) 15:31, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'd say perhaps something more inline with   , it doesn't have to be this exact colour but like this kind of pale orange-beige. I got this from using depictions of Whig flags in paintings HGP7 (talk) 20:25, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
