The Comamonadaceae are a family of Gram-negative bacteria in the order Burkholderiales.[1][2] The family is phenotypically and metabolically diverse. Cultivated members include aerobic organotrophs, anaerobic denitrifiers and iron-reducing bacteria, hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria, phototrophs, and fermentative bacteria.[3] Most described members have been isolated from water or soil, although some occur in animal-associated habitats or have been recovered from human clinical samples.[3]

Taxonomy

[edit]

The family was established for the acidovorans rRNA complex, with Comamonas as its type genus.[2][1]

Genome-based and 16S rRNA analyses showed that several genera formerly assigned to Comamonadaceae formed a distinct sister lineage. This lineage is now classified as the family Sphaerotilaceae.[4][5] Genera now placed in Sphaerotilaceae include Leptothrix, Sphaerotilus, Caldimonas, Ideonella, and Roseateles.[5]

Genera

As of August 2026, the following 40 genera have validly published names and are accepted by LPSN as members of Comamonadaceae:[1]
