Candra Nazarudin Darusman (born 21 August 1957) is an Indonesian musician, composer, arranger, songwriter, and record producer.[1] He is known as a member of the pioneering Indonesian jazz-funk bands Chaseiro and Karimata, as well as for his solo career.[2] He has also served as the Chairman of the Indonesian Music Workers Association (YAMI) and the National Collective Management Institute (LMKN).[3]

Early life

Candra Darusman was born on 21 August 1957 in Bogor, Indonesia.[1][4] He developed an interest in music at a young age and began playing piano and keyboards.[5] He was influenced by the music of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Herbie Hancock.[5]

Career

Chaseiro (1978–1984)

In 1978, Darusman co-founded the band Chaseiro, a group that blended jazz, funk, and pop music.[2] The band's debut album, Pemuda, was released in 1980 and became a commercial success.[6] Chaseiro released several albums throughout the early 1980s, including Kau (1982), which featured the hit single "Kau".[2] The band became one of the most popular groups in Indonesia during this period.[2]

Karimata (1986–1990)

In 1986, Darusman joined Karimata, a supergroup formed by some of Indonesia's most prominent jazz musicians.[2] The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1986 and featured Darusman on piano and vocals.[7] Karimata performed at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in 1986, marking a significant achievement for Indonesian jazz musicians.[2][8]

Solo career (1980s–present)

In the 1980s, Darusman released his debut solo album, Indahnya Sepi.[9] The album was re-released in 2018 after nearly three decades.[9] In 2018, he released Pengungkapan Hatimu.[10] In 2019, he released Lamun Ombak.[10] In 2022, he released Detik Waktu #2.[10] In 2025, he released a new single and a physical album titled Salah Sendiri, while also re-releasing Kekagumanku as a remastered edition.[11][12]

In August 2025, Darusman released a new single and a book titled Perjalanan Sebuah Lagu, reflecting on the nation's life and encouraging the younger generation to develop innovation and creativity.[13][14] In November 2025, he commented on the role of the AMI Awards in reflecting the development of Indonesian music.[15]

Music industry leadership

Darusman has served as the Chairman of the Indonesian Music Workers Association (YAMI).[3] In this role, he has advocated for the rights of musicians and the development of the creative economy.[3]

He has also served as the Chairman of the National Collective Management Institute (LMKN), an organization responsible for collecting and distributing royalties to songwriters and musicians.[3] He has spoken publicly about the challenges of royalty payments and the need for digitalization in the music industry.[16][17]

In 2025, Darusman emphasized the importance of strengthening LMKN's role through digitalization, stating that technology can help improve the efficiency and transparency of royalty collection.[18]

Darusman's music is characterized by its blend of jazz, funk, and pop elements.[2] His work with Chaseiro and Karimata helped define the sound of Indonesian jazz-funk in the 1980s.[2] He has cited The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea as major influences.[5]
